unethical practice by lifeline hospital

Unethical practice by lifeline hospital Chennai

My name is Birju Patel; I am a 32 year old paraplegic. A paraplegic is a person whose lower limbs have been paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury or a spinal cord ailment. Since December 2002 I have been in a wheel chair because of a car accident that happened in USA. I am paralyzed chest below, and desperately want to walk again as I used to before the accident. I have tried to find out about medical technologies that would help me to walk again. Stem cell is the next big hope for people that are in the same situation. In my condition we tend to trust any person that would give us a glimpse of hope, and the thought that we would walk again. I was cheated by such an institute that lit the lamp of my hopes.

In January of 2007 I got in touch with Dr. Ravi Kumar of Lifeline hospital, Chennai http://www.lifeline-hospital.com/ This man said that their stem cell programmed showed great promise. He even claimed that of 11 patients form the pilot study, two had stated to walk again.

So on the 5th of February I received an email where he has clearly mentioned that 2 of 11 patients are walking. I still have the copy in my yahoo inbox

Re: Medical Reports of Birju Patel Baroda

Dear Mr. Patel,

Of our 11 Patients with Spinal Cord injury 2 patients
have started to walk in the last 2 months. But they
may improve further in the next 2-3 months. As the
Therapy was started only in November These are early
days. Also no body had any side effects or infecion.

Titanium Implants are no problem- Most of the patients
had some spinal fixation during surgery.

Stem cell therapy is a New therapy in the realm of
latest innovations in the field of Medicine. In strict
Medicolegal terms - it is in a stage of "CLINICAL
STUDY " only . US FDA has not started looking at it as
nobody in USA is trying it out. In India ICMR (Indian
Council of Medical research)has provisionally approved
Adult Stem cell Therapy NOT EMBRYONIC therapy.

Insurance does not cover it in India- Also nobody has
applied for it. That will take atleast 5 years and
hundreds of case studies worldwide.
Also the cost of RX is 50-60000 Rs which is nominal.

I will try to send phone numbers of other patients.

The yield of stem cells are about 750-1500 Million
cells and actually that is only 1% of the Total cells
in 100 ml of blood sample we take out from the
patient.

No side effects have been noticed till now and none
expected ,except in very few cases - Mild fever for
1-2 days.

I will also highlight that in case you have any
doubts of efficacy etc of the treatment you may wait
for 1-2 years for full results to be out as these are
VERY EARLY DAYS for us to comment further and we are
observing final results in the majority of patients.

best wishes,

DR R.RAVI KUMAR

I was very excited after receiving this email, and I was waiting for Dr. Ravi to send me the numbers of the patients that were walking after the treatment. On the 8th of February of 2007 I received an email from Dr. Ravi Kumar with the numbers of both the patients

Re: Medical Reports of Birju Patel Baroda

Dear Birju,
I am giving the numbers of 2 of our patients whose
numbers are available with us:

 1. Mr Srinivas ,Chennai city:09840940283
 2. Mr Akbar Ali ,Village in Cuddalore Distt Tamil
Nadu :09486279887

You may contact them in person.
Mr Srinivas had started treatment 3 months back and is
doing very well.
Akbar Ali is a more Complicated case ,he started
treatment in December.

best wishes,

Dr RAVI KUMAR

This email was a moral boost for me, I was excited that I was going to speak to two people that have improved so much after the treatment. First I called Ali Akbar, but couldn’t communicate much with him because he only spoke Tamil. Then I called Mr. Srinivas who spoke Hindi as well as English too, it was a real delight talking to him because he had the same injury level as mine “thoracic 3”. I spoke to him twice and made up my mind that this place will definitely heal me for sure. After the fantastic telephonic conversation I went to Chennai and underwent the stem cell procedure. The detail on my procedure is on the following link.

http://birjupatel.blogspot.com/2007/02/my-stem-cell-treatment-trip.html

A while back I spoke to Mr. Suresh Raj who is a coordinator of the stem cell department in lifeline hospital. Some thing was very fishy; the voices of Mr. Srinivas and Mr. Suresh seemed very similar. So I went to the website http://www.stemcell-india.com/ and checked the Contact us section http://www.stemcell-india.com/contact.htm . I was so hurt to see the Mr. Suresh’s number on this page and Mr. Srinivas’s number on the above email was the same 09840940283. One can check this link and the email that I have pasted on this article. The hospital’s website has hidden the contact page, but the link still works. I have even copied that page http://picasaweb.google.com/patelville/KOTAKAL2004/photo#5123834435588273282 Please magnify this photo to see the contents.

I was furious and in my anger I wrote an email to Dr. Ravi Kumar. I have everything in my various emails as evidence. I will give a brief note on the multiple emails that were exchanged on this matter.

  1. First, I just questioned about Mr. Srinivas’s absence in the media. I told him that it was hard to digest that his name was not mentioned in spite of being healed. When Ali Akbar was being publicized so much, there was no mention of Mr. Srinivas.

Dr. Ravi replied that they couldn’t contact Mr. Srinvas because he when back to a rural part of Tamilnadu and was hard to locate him. “In his previous email he mentioned Mr. Srinivas from Chennai”

  1. I confronted him that I know that Mr. Suresh was the one the person that talked to me on the phone as Mr. Srinivas. I even told him that both the numbers were same.

Dr. Ravikumar replied that I might have spoken to him when he was in the hospital. He said most of the patients were poor, so they used the hospital phone.

  1. I told Dr. Ravi that I spoke to Mr. Srinavas twice, first time he was at home and the second time he was at his business.

Dr. Ravi Kumar replied that initially those patients were given mobile phone to use, so that they could locate them easily.

All these exchanges of information were done during a course of a week, Dr Ravi lied so much to hide the unethical step that he and lifeline hospital took to lure me into taking this treatment. If Mr. Srinivas was Chennai then why did he go to the rural area? Why would a man leave his business and go away when he can walk again. It is hard to digest that the hospital doesn’t have records of a person that was miraculously healed by their cutting edge medical treatment. Why are they hiding the contact us page from their website?

I feel that I took a great risk with my life by undertaking this treatment. Their was a time when doctors were considered be gods on earth that would help people by fighting their sufferings. My main question is where is that term “medical ethics” gone, all the doctors take an oath that they would never lie or cheat a patient. I am lucky that I didn’t get any adverse effects from this treatment. I just want these people to stop scamming people like this; I know that many people have borrowed money to take such treatments. I still have a lot of faith in stem cell treatment, and I will still try to find a treatment that would give me a chance to heal.

wow.. This is quite serious. Isn't there a legal recourse? But I can understand how that may be difficult for you, since these are the same people who could potentially help you walk again. Medical Clinics are a completely unchecked business in India. Wish there was something that could be done about it.

It is very sad that we all can only feel sorry for what is happening and cannot do anything more than that. This is one in amillion case what we know about, as unfortunate Indians like Mr.Durai had mentioned, Indian Leagal system S----. It has no law to protect an normal citizen &has all loop holes to cover rouges like Dr.Raj kumar. With regard to Lifeline Hospital, you can be rest assured that the patient is close to mourtuary. They are very famous or infamous for all their fasifying surgery where patients are forced to surgery for any of the smallest ailment. Just another way to make money. Everytime an incident takes place we all say it is similar to the movie RAMANA, but seldom can do anything as we are not heroes & our normal life has to go on & we compromise.Hope our laws really favours us & not cover only the rouges.

We all should conduct a negative campagain against that hospital. This is such a contrast how the britishers deal their patients and our Indian doctors deal. Kindly take a strong action against the hospital management and the doctors. I pray for u snd the little one.

Hi, I came here from the link in the email circulating by AGDUrai.. a few years back I lost my mom to a similar mistake by a doctor in Combatore - Kovai Medical Hospital (similar to the AGDurai case - duodenum rupture). Doctors have become so money minded and commercial its very difficult for patients. Hope you find a good one. God Bless.

So sad to hear of the unethical practice followed by the hospital. This is not the first instance of such cheating methods to extract money by many institutions.

I recollect Maj. Kohli of Himalayan Expedition who is also a paraplegic has a exclusive spinal chord injury treatment centre at Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, on the road to airport from vasant Kunj. Any one can contact them.

CHARGESHEETED

Doctor in the dock for patient’s death

K Praveen Kumar | TNN

Chennai: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the city police has filed a chargesheet in the Alandur court against a Chennai-based surgeon for medical negligence that led to the death of a 21-year-old youth who underwent bariatric surgery in his hospital. The CCB found a prima facie case against Dr Rajkumar of Lifeline Hospital after taking the opinion of a team of doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. The investigation was initiated following a complaint from the parents of Vignesh, who died after the surgery in 2006.

According to highly placed sources, the medical committee had gone into all the details of the surgery conducted by Dr Rajkumar on Vignesh, who weighed 240 kg at the time of surgery and also the reasons for death.

“We have the report of the medical expert committee from AIIMS with us. The team of doctors has found that the boy died due to medical negligence. We have mentioned the details in the chargesheet filed before the Alandur court a few days ago,” a senior police official told The Times Of India.

The CCB took the help of the expert committee as they did not have the technical authority to investigate the medical reason for the death.

According to police, Vignesh, who was obese, met Dr Rajkumar at a dinner party. “He had told Vignesh that his weight could be reduced through surgery. Vignesh then got admitted to Lifeline Hospital and underwent bariatric surgery. His condition got worse after surgery. On the fourth day, he was taken to another hospital and he died there. Subsequently, a complaint of medical negligence was filed against the doctor,” the police official added.

When contacted, Dr Rajkumar said that he was yet to get the copy of the chargesheet. “I still maintain that the man’s death was not because of my negligence,” he said.

I think you should still fight and take legal help. The MEDIA can really address this issue. This should stop all other culprits that are still around hungry for money and practicing unethically. think abt all the other ppl that you might save and help

Patelville said...

I tried to take this issue to the media. One person from cnn ibn was working on it too. He wanted to talk to others too, so i gave a number of a guy. But the thing is that his mom didnt wantd that guy to be sad, so she said he was going good after the therapy and this way that reporter lost the interest

Anonymous said...

Kill this guy - Dr.Ravikumar by a simple method. Hurt him badly by an accident that would necessitate a surgery on him and admit him in his own lifeline hospital for treatment.

Break down the lifeline hospital building. They are big cheaters.

Some changes had requested by Mr Durai, so i am re-posting this comment and will remove the original one.

LIFE AFTER DEATH – real life (rather death) experience

This is not a philosophical statement on one's life after death, this is about how my wife, Padma died in a hospital in Chennai. Whatever I have seen only in movies so far, is experienced by me.

We were living in the UK for few years; our family includes me, my wife (Padma), and our 7 yr old son and 8months old daughter. My wife had a symptom of ventral hernia (slightly bulged abdomen), we had consulted General Physician and Surgeon in the UK and advice was that she needed a surgery to have a mesh to fix the problem with a few weeks rest. We were also told that this is not an emergency and it can be done anytime though earlier is good. In fact the surgeon whom we consulted in UK talked about an example of a lady having this done for 30 years of the symptom. My wife did not have any specific pain or something except a small discomfort of bulgy abdomen (like a 2 months pregnant lady) and she was in her normal routine of taking care of our children, taking our son to school, household work, etc.

We were planning for Christmas vacation in India in Dec 2007, we thought we will consult some 'good' doctors over in India and take a decision of when we will do the surgery if required and possibly felt doing in India is good because of family support. We have got a reference of Dr J S Rajkumar of Lifeline hospital and we booked an appointment to meet him.

We landed in Chennai on 14th Dec 2007 for a three weeks vacation, met Dr Rajkumar at his city hospital (Rigid hospital) in Chetput on 15th Dec 2007 (Sat) at about 730pm. We have explained him the background, shown him all the comments of UK surgeon, medical reports related to my wife pregnancy, deliveries, etc (she had delivered both our children normally). After few minutes of assessment Dr Rajkumar told us this hernia requires laparoscopic surgery and we can do this next day itself. We were little concerned initially of getting this surgery done the very next day (particularly we were still not out of jet lag and she was feeding our baby) and got convinced with the 'salesy' words given by the Doctors. To quote a comment from the Doctor "she will run in two days time and can lift two suitcases and you can return to UK as per your plan on 3rd Jan 2008"). Also Dr Rajkumar told us that he will be on travel for 3 days from 17th Dec and moreover he was teaching Post Graduates on 16th Dec about laparoscopic surgery and let us get it done on 16th Dec.

Then my wife was put into all sorts of equipments in the hospital (in the name of assessment); blood, urine, ECG, MRI and so on and the tests were conducted till about 11pm on 15th Dec. In fact they have opened the labs after closing hours and got the test done and handed over the test results to us. They had some problem in the ECG and we were told that ECG can be done on the next day at Lifeline hospital.

We were asked to report to Rigid hospital at 5am in the morning. Think of it, we went our residence around midnight and my wife had rush on some food to keep compliance on the fasting 8 hrs prior to surgery. After preparing for the hospital visit that night and a couple of hours sleep (3 hrs or so) we reached Rigid hospital on 16th morning at 5am or so and from there we were transported by an 'ambulance' to Lifelife hospital in Perungudi (outskirts of Chennai).

We reached the hospital at 630am, paid some initial advance for the surgery and we were given a room. Padma went through some more basic checks like height, weight, etc. Padma was taken to the operation theatre at about 10am in the morning on 16th Dec. After the laparoscopic procedure she was moved to post operative ward at about 12 noon and I have met her in the afternoon to say a small hello when she gained consciousness. Dr Rajkumar met us on 16th Dec afternoon and he in fact congratulated me for successful surgery and said he has used proceed mesh (costly one) and advised his staff to move Padma to normal ward in the evening as she had to feed her baby. But, Padma was moved to normal ward only on 17th Dec morning, she was on IV fluids as per normal post operative procedure.

Padma started to develop some fluids in her abdomen which duty doctors / surgeons have 'rightly' observed. She was put in some series of tests on 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th – tests include multiple ultra sound, multiple CT scans, pricked her abdomen and taken fluids, she had a long tube through her nose overnight to collect fluid for tests, etc. We were told the fluid is normal after surgery and it will be alright after she passes stool, etc.

In the meanwhile Dr Rajkumar returned from his travel and seen Padma on 19th on 20th Dec evening along with other surgeons. He made an assessment and he told me that he might want to do one more laparoscopic surgery to find out what is the fluid about. He wanted to do a surgery on 20th Dec evening itself, but he could not proceed as the hospital has given solid food that afternoon – hence anaesthesia could not be given. (lack of co-ordination among departments, time lost here, may be she could have survived if they have did the surgery on 20th itself)

On 20th Dec night, fluid started oozing from Padma's abdomen stitches, after the duty Doctor's assessment she was shifted to ICU. We really did not know what complication she developed in the ICU.

On 21st Dec (Friday) morning around 830am I was called in to the ICU to convey that they are going to perform a surgery and I had to sign "high risk consent", they were telling this in front of my wife (just think of a patient hearing this before the surgery). I was just shocked at that and had no options to sign whatever they wanted. I said "all the best" (my last conversation with my wife) to my wife and she was taken to Operation Theatre.

While I was discussing with the Doctors at ICU, the cashier in the hospital kept on calling me on my mobile. When I met the cashier he asked for Rs.60,000 to be paid immediately and I told him take Rs.40,000 and will give you the balance later in the day. Bang a reply came, "you have to pay the money to for me to give clearance for surgery". When I expressed my unhappiness about the comment, he insisted for me to sign a piece of paper saying that I will give the money later in the day. (What money minded, in-human attitude!)

We had no news from the hospital on their own about the surgery, I had enquired the staff nurse and visited my wife in the ICU and learnt that she had a diagnostic laparotomy (open surgery) and there was hole in the intestine which was fixed.

We have meet Dr Rajkumar at about 3:30pm on 21st Dec and understood that there was a duodenum rupture and he has fixed it, at the same time he removed the mesh which was fixed on 16th Dec. She was also paralysed and put on ventilator as she was waking up. He explained it was between life threatening and beauty so they addressed the duodenum rupture problem. What we were puzzled were, how did the rupture happen? for that explanation given were
- it could be due to ulcer. My wife had no evidence of ulcer in the past. Explanation given was 40%+ cases of ulcer is silent and there will be no symptom (I lack medical knowledge to appreciate this)
- it could be due to post operative stress (so many test post operation without any explanation of what we were doing could have created the stress on Padma is my argument)

On the same night (21st Dec) at about 930pm, I was called in to the ICU and Doctors conveyed that my wife condition is critical – her pulse is high, BP is low and they were attending to her. I insisted on talking to Dr Rajkumar immdly, but they refused to connect me to him at first and finally managed to speak to him. Dr Rajkumar came in around midnight and explained that the lungs are getting affected (shown X-ray of white patches on the lower portion of lungs) and she was the most serious patient in the whole hospital that time and they were trying their best. He also said, it will need another 12-24 hours of observation before they can say anything.

We were completely panicked and just waiting outside the ICU and praying for Padma's recovery. We had to argue with the security outside the ICU to gain access to the Doctors to know her situation (no courtesy from the security personnel, who just don't understand the situation)

At about 4:30am in the morning, my friend gained access the Doctors in the ICU and came out with the low face to tell me that Padma's condition is worsened. Again I tried to reach Dr Rajkumar and the hospital says they don't have his contact number (just can't understand how they can behave like this). Finally after some hue and cry Dr Rajkumar came on line to tell me that he is not God and don't think his visit can do any thing different. I cried, begged him to come over to give some ideas to his team to recover Padma. He came over at around 6am and said they are trying everything possible, etc; but her end came quickly.

The end came to our beloved Padma at 6:30am on 22nd Dec, throwing the entire family to rude shock and a life time sorrow. Our "LIVES AFTER DEATH" of Padma has changed for ever.

I can now think of so many questions retrospectively;

1. Why did the surgeon perform the surgery the very next day of consultancy, that too for a non-emergency one like this? (Padma had just travelled many miles, she was not even out of jet lag.) Was it for money? Was it for them to get one more sample for their post grads training?

2. Did the Doctors made proper assessment on Padma's fitness for surgery, frankly did they even had time to go through the reports, after the tests till 11pm on the previous night for next day 8am surgery (particularly when the reports were with us till 730am on the day of surgery).

3. Patient communication and counselling. Isn't it important to communicate to patient and their relatives on the development of patient condition (fluid collection started from the next day of laparoscopic)

4. Did the absence of Dr Rajkumar for three days post the first surgery is one of the reason for this disaster? Were the other Doctors not able to diagnose or take a decision? Were they waiting for Dr Rajkumar return?

5. What is the real reason for duodenum perforation? My wife never had any history of ulcer to the best of my knowledge. Why did the hospital take so much of time to react (5 days after surgery) when such a crucial thing like perforation has happened.

6. Was there any issue in the initial laparoscopic procedure which has caused the perforation?

7. Careless attitude by hospital staff? – my wife sex was recorded as "Male" initially and corrected after I told them. The staff was not even apologetic for this, he rather asked me "why didn't you inform". Can't he make out with the name Padma. Think of it, if he has changed the blood group from A+ to B+; that is it!!

8. Will anyone with basic common sense ask for high risk signature in front of the patient? I was asked to sign just minutes before surgery in front of my wife.

9. Is the hospital money minded?: They were demanding money on gun point almost.
a. Prior to the first surgery the cashier said please give Rs.30000/- more for him to give clearance for surgery
b. When my wife going for second surgery I was told by the cashier again, please give Rs.60000/- for clearance for surgery
c. The hospital charged more than what was told for initial laparoscopic, without even communicating to me increase in charges
d. The final "bill" was just on letter head, without mention of currency, invoice number, etc. I had to insist on a proper invoice later.
e. I was given to understand that they even made arguments on ambulance charges to send my wife dead body back home.!! (making money on the dead body also)

10. Why the hospital did not made me to talk to my wife when she gained consciousness after the second surgery? If not anything else, I could have held her hand. Even a criminal gets an opportunity to communicate his/her last wishes. Am I or my wife worse than?

11. FALSE reports - After all these hospital sends me false reports (on Jan 11, 2008 – three weeks after my wife's death) :

a. They had mentioned she had LSCS (caesarean section) and large scar due to LSCS. When my wife delivered both the babies normally, how does one record as caesarean and how there will be scar when there was no caesarean?
b. The hernia was mentioned "incisional hernia" – when there was no incision on her body how the hernia is categorised as incisional? It was actually ventral hernia. Don't think one can replace any term with any term just like that!
c. Most importantly, the surgery was performed on 16th Dec 2007, the report said 17th dec 2007

12. MISSING REPORTS - From the hospital records Doctors notes were missing for 16th and 17th Dec. The first report is available for 17th Dec at 8:36pm. How come there are no Doctors' notes for about 36 hours after the surgery? Isn't it fishy? Did something went wrong on the first laparoscopic procedure?

Our entire family is still mourning and trying to reconcile the fact that our Padma is no more. My 7 year old son is aware that is Mom is not there, does he understand? My 1 year old daughter is too young to know what has happened. What will her questions be in future?

My sincere advice to all is
a) Do not get carried away by advertisement / TV shows / big buildings
b) Please do not rush
c) Do your own due diligence, particularly when things are not an emergency
d) Try and understand the medical terms, do research prior
e) Please ask questions, at every stage.
f) Don't say "I can spend anything"
g) Know patient rights

I am still not convinced that Padma has died after a 'simple' laparoscopic surgery? I am deeply upset of what has happened to Padma and for what is happening to us. What I could have done (or not done) which would have prevented this. What is that we can do to prevent this in future for others!!!

Please join me in making awareness to others. While India is trying to woo many international Customers in the name of 'medical tourism'; first let the authorities make regulation on the health care system and take care of Indian people first.

Read others experience as well

Our medical system must understand the differences between MEDICINE – TREATMENT and HEALTHCARE. What we get most of the time is medicine for the symptom while we need healthcare.

Dear Friends
REAL LIFE (rather good) EXPERIENCE-LIFELINE HOSPITAL CHENNAI.
Life line Hospital saved my Cousin from the grip of death.
I am shocked to see such a blog against lifeline and Dr.Rajkumar.
My cousin Master Saran Prasad.
A year back he had spells of giddiness and severe headache. Local Doctors were treating him symptomatically. One day all of sudden while he was playing he fainted and rushed to one of the big hospital in Salem. They did all investigation and diagnosed as tumour from the adrenal glad which is situated above kidney. The whole family was depressed and we took him to one of the pioneer cancer institute in Chennai. They again did all investigations and finally suggested surgery and said survival is poor and its high risk procedure.
Team of doctors opened his abdomen and they were shocked to see that the cancer tumour has extended and further continuing surgery may result in death on the table.
So the procedure was abandoned. Doctors informed us that he will survive only for few weeks. The whole family was sad and my cousin also knows that he will die shortly. We came to know the surgical skill of Dr.Rajkumar and we took a chance and visited Lifeline which is nearby.
After detailed examination and going through all the reports he said there is a chance to save my cousin.
He and his team did meticulous job and removed tumour completely. It was a second birth for my cousin. Now, he is living happily which he wouldn’t have got but for Dr.Rajkumar and Lifeline. So it is really agonizing to see such blind accusations against a doctor who saved life of a young boy and many others. Many good events by Doctors are not recognized but one unfortunate event which is quiet acceptable in medical practice has been blown out of proportion.
This may set a dangerous precedence where even a minor complication may be blown out of proportion which I am sure it will have a negative Doctor patient relationship.

Iyanpan,
Well these are not fake allegations, you make it sound as if we are trying to put a saint down. Didnt you read that same doctor has killed many people because of his mistake. I would had let it go if he had killed one person by mistake, but killing so many people is not tolerable.
You are blowing his horn because you had a good experience, but if you put yourself in our shoe you would realize what that hospital is doing.
We all have our duties and teams, and we all have to play for our team no matter what. So you do your duty and we will do ours. I just hope that you don't hurt in this match. All the best and god bless your cousin.

Mr.Iyappan,

I also took stem cell therapy in the same hospital, read the following details and reply,

a.Reports i am having,

a.1. Report from lifeline in which they mentioned that stemcells were prepared from my bone marrow.
(Actually lifeline doctors were not able to collect my bone marrow because i am having HO in my hips and so they collected my peripheral blood).

a.2. Report from NCRM- Institute which prepares stemcells for lifeline, says that stemcells were prepared from my peripheral blood. And also they mentioned that they did bonemarrow bacterial culture as additional service.

Waiting for your reply.

Iyappan,

Yes. The hospital / doctor may have done a good job in many cases. They are getting paid for rendering proper service. But when they do a bad job even in one case it has to be highlighted. When they do a bad job in ore than one case, then all the more it needs to be highlighted and when they have done many bad jobs killing their patients and not accepting the mistake and justifying it and extracting more and more money, it is the height of limit and serious action needs to be contemplated by the community. Silent watching is abetting a crime. So wake up to reality, irrespective of who is affected, as it may be you or your near and dear next in another hospital. We don't want it to happen to anyone of us citizens, as life is precious and hospitals should truly extend the lifeline and not cut it short!!

This is my response to Durai's mail

I am a resident of Adayar,Chennai, India, aged 40, Entrepreneur, mother of two grown up girls, in my family, my father ,daughter, husband, brother and myself have all undergone surgeries performed by Dr.J S Rajkumar, at his newly founded Life Line Hospital. Perungudi.( My father underwent the surgery four years ago at Rigid Hospital, Kilpauk.)

Recently less than a month ago my mother underwent a vertibroplasty and my aunt got her wrist fixed with a supportive plate.

My or rather our experience at the hospital was that of a very pleasant one. Always felt that we were being well taken care of. During my brief stay at the hospital during these occasions, got to see and understand, that Dr.JS Rajkumar, is doing so much for the less unfortunate counterparts. Is so passionate about his work, that I decided to help him in his noble quest to support the mankind in what little ways I could.

Dr. J S Rajkumar, is a finest of fine human being , never capable of any malice, pettiness
or harm to any one. He performs each surgery ,each procedure with the same care and precision.I would say, He has infact sacrificed all his personal comforts and desire to relieve the pain of the suffering patients. Such is his commitment.

I am surprised when such a person is projected as someone trying to work for a monetary gains. He runs a hospital needs money to pay his overheads, Bankers, sure they wont be benevolent to waive off the payment due, if he were to say that he didn’t charge his patients,or treated them at a subsidized rate. But despite this, the truth is, he does waive off a lot of expenses incurred by his patients, if he understands that the person is financially backward and cant pay. Never has hospital refused treatment to anyone coming there, quoting monetary reasons for denial. If the hospital staff demands money as a deposit, prior to any treatment , it is a routine procedure at every hospital. Wonder why Life line Hospital is singled out in this aspect? I know not of a hospital that admits patients without taking any money as deposit. Leave the hospital, even the hotels don’t give you admission without deposit.

Dr J S Rajkumar is a very sensitive person , his sensitivity and his human touch has made his so special and dear to his patients. Who consider themselves a part of his family extended family. Indeed mine is one such family!

There are few who look the other way or wont help, even when you seek them.
There are a few to whom you need to only narrate a woe and the help /solution is offered.
Any one associated with Dr J S Rajkumar, with immediately say that he belongs to the second category. I am proud to be associated with him.

The hospital perfoms free surgeries on poor ,under previledged children with congenial heart problems , I on my part has try to support the programme in all possible ways.
Also try to be a part of any philantropic acitivities of the Hospital.

I am pained beyond limit when a person whom the hospital out of moral responsibility tries to support turns against! I think it must have been accepted as a way of life by Life Line Hospital, I guess, as it is the case at most of the time!

Dr. Rajkumar, called me six months ago, stating that Mr. DuraiVel, is going through a traumatic time after losing his wife, while recovering from a surgery ath the Hospital. Requesting me to counsel him and to be of support him and his children. That is how I know Mr.Duraivel.

I met him, spoke to him, requested my close find a psychologist to counsel him,I tried to do my might, was in touch with him not only because I was instructed by the hospital, but also because Mr.Duraivel is a fine person. I still cant reconcile that, He can go out of the way to tarnish the image of an institution and a person who genuinely wished him well and tried to support him. I still feel he is venting his anger and is doing all this in an emotional outburst!

In fact, Mr.Duraivel has found a residence close to where we live(four blocks away from my friends place) , because he wanted reside some where close to where we live.(That is what he told us, as his parents live at the other end of the city).

Durai, if not for Life Line Hospital, we wont even know that we existed ? would we?

Why did I get in touch with you? When people don’t have time for their own family and friends, because that is the regard I have for Dr. J S Rajkumar , which was built after seeing his selfless service and care he shares for the humanity as a whole!

I want to share this with all. This is my personal observation.

1.Dr J S Rajkumar, can turn into a Super Specialist, and lead a hassle free life , with far superior name and fame, had he chosen to do so.Instead he chose to serve the society, though the hospital is a commercial Organisation , the trust he has formed in the name of his Grandfather, Rajarathinam Medical and educational Foundation, supports the poor patients admitted into the hospital in a large way.

2. I am not trying to say that the hospital never commits a mistake, but they are few and not garve. The Management constantly endeovers to correct themselves.

3. Dr. J S Rajkumar, is a man who wants to constantly update his hospital with the latest technical advancement, so that he can provide superior health care and perform precision surgeries.

4. The list of what Dr. J S Rajkumar has done: free cancer treatment, treating HIV patients, free medical camps/surgeries, free cardiac surgeries,SNATCHING MANY PATIENTS FROM THE CLAWS OF DEATH ……. The list is very long.

5. I have personally seen so many of his patients infact ,some ,on whom others have given up hope , being successfully treated and cured .They, Thank Dr.J S Rajkumar, earnestly for having gifted them life.

6. But when I analyse it a little closely, I understand most trains make it safely each day to their destination, this never gets reported as News. But occasionally when a train derails it hits the Headlines. But then, Just because a train has derailed occasionally, for whatever reason , people have not stopped commuting by it , or even thought twice before Boarding a train.

7.Dear Durai, didn’t you at one point of time say that you understood and also the Hospital has clarified that this is not their mistake, and was just your own ill fate? Now why then are you saying something different? Why so much bitterness?

8. Durai. Negativity never gives happiness on a long run, tarnishing someone’s image may not be the right way to vent your feelings. Use this energy outpour to do some productive work, for that matter, join me in supporting Dr. J S RajKumar in his noble Quest to help the humanity. I take this liberty of telling you this, as I am really your well wisher and Believe me, Once you associate yourself with him , you will have a different story to narrate my friend.

9. My write up may not be as sensational as what Mr. DuariVel had to tell you. For my principles has taught me that , nothing is a better sin than keeping quite and refraining from speaking what is right at times when it matters most. Concerned and worried about the consequences of speaking out.

Both must be giving their version of their story. There is nothing wrong in it. Right is right and wrong is wrong. They have a right to point out the wrong and right.

Let us analyse the details and advise next course of action.

Sripriya, Can you elaborate on facts produced by Mr.Durai and Mr. Brij Patel? We know you can not. Instead what you are doing is counseling. Most probably you are paid for that. We are not amused.

We could see crime behind the so called charity you are boasting about the activities of the said Doctor. If 1 % foul is detected in a doctor's practices, he is not good for that profession. Let alone. And please don't take pains to compare the running of trains with that of Hospitals. Have you ever investigated to what happens to the signal staff/driver or who makes the error out of negligence? I know You never. They simply lose their job.

Most crimes especially medical go undetected. But all leave traces behind, if closely watched, can be detected.

In the case of Mr.Brij Patel, the doctor has committed fraud - very evidently. And as in Mrs.Prama's (wife of Mr.Durai's) it is a case of poor negligence and incompetency.

I wonder why educated people like Mr.Durai and Mr.Patel prefer not to sue them till this moment ( I didn't see a post to that effect)as both have money and patience to do so. Enough is enough - stop blogging and file the suit.

Now that I have been a witness to many positive incidents, let me take the pleasure of sharing a few.

My maternal uncles live in Salem. I often visit them. Recently I had been to Salem to attend the wedding of my cousin.

During the my stay there, I happened to see a lady living in the neighbourhood literally roll in stomach pain. Got a little curious and enquired about her health. I was told that she is suffering from a condition called Ulcerative Colitis(fairly grave condition can turn malignant) and has been undergoing treatment for a period of 10-12 years without much relief. Since I was frequenting Lifeline Hospital, spoke to Dr.J S Rajkumar,he consented to meet her. In the initial diagnosis itself Dr. J S Rajkumar suspected that she has been unnecessarily being treated for Ulcerative colitis . The drugs administered have severe and damaging side effets. So she was asked to undergo a conclusive test called Capsule endoscopy(which is a very sophisticated test that not many hospitals can boast of) to rule out the possibility of Ulcerative colitis. This is a 11 hr exhaustive study of the digestive tract. She was diagonised to be suffering from a relatively simple Irritable bowl. I still cant forget the happy and the gratitude filled eyes which thanked the Doctor. She was so happy that she did not suffer any major ailment and can lead a normal life like others.I personally felt so pleased in bringing relief to a person. Nostalgic indeed!

I am waiting for the patients consent to reveail their name.( who underwent stemcell therapy)
The person in the above stoty is Ms. Jyothi, a resident of Salem, Mobile No.9443621215.
Spoke to her, she is willing to clarify , doubts ,if any.

This is the narration of my husband who underwent treatment at life line hospital in his own words. Since you want exact details.Try to furnish wherever possible. I know of many whose life has been turned around by the Bariatric Surgery( fat surgery). Shall narrate after taking consent from the concerned patient.

I am T.Swaminathan, an engineer, passed out from college of Engineering , Guindy and also The Hon. Secretary of Alumni Club, Boat Club Road, Chennai. I had undergone a surgery at Life Line Hospital Perungudi. I underwent the laproscopis Fundoplication on 27/03/2007 for Gastric reflux and Dr J S Rajkumar successfully conducted the operation.

Infact, prior to the surgery, Dr J S Rajkumar, procedurely went through the format of testing me throughly and only as a last resort adviced surgical correction.Again I wish to state that from the time I got admitted till discharge ,the hospital conducted themselves in a professional manner and I am indebted until my last breath to Dr J S Rajkumar and life line hospital for bringing me relief. May God give long life and happiness to Dr. J S Rajkimar and let Life Line Hospital flourish and do service to Mankind.

Dear friends,
first of all let me clarify that I am not trying to take sides. I do not know much about stem cell but I know something about dr rajkumar. I wish to share my experience. Nobody should get the trauma of seeing one's mother developing cancer. definitely not twice. i had that experience. we could not have been successful without the help of dr rajkumar on both occasions.and after seeing ur emails i dont know what to say about dr rajkumar . i can only go by what my heart tells me.i shall only mention my experience and let you be the judge. My name is Chithra. I am a municipal councillor from Mogappair ( west). I feel sorry for mr durai. Although i have heard similar incidents, I have a lot of faith in DR JS Rajkumar from a personal experience. Infact we had good experience twice involving major cancer operations. My mother Saraswathi was operated upon by Dr JS Rajkumar at Rigid hospital 9 years ago for a cancer in the food pipe involving the lower part near the stomach. We consulted many surgeons before going to DR Rajkumar . Those doctors dilly dallyed a lot and were referring to many other places for investigations, tests, CT scan etc. nobody could give us a guarantee about the success of the operation. We were happy to find everything under one roof at Rigid hospital as my mother could not travel much and they got her ready for the operation very quickly. our duration of further waiting and anxiety was shortened. We explained our situation to the billing department that we may not be able to pay mucn as we had already spent a lot. They said dr had already told them to reduce the package as my mother was suffering for quite some time. The operation went on smoothly. Dr removed the lower part of food pipe and upper part of stomach and re joined it. After the operation my mother could not eat for some time. we were all worried about the tube in her nose. slowly the swelling in her stomach came down and she was given water. she stayed in hospital for two weeks. at one stage dr said we may consider operating again if the swelling did not reduce. but it reduced with monitoring after a few days. By god's grace she was fine eating normally and put on weight. we were all happy. Dr further reduced our bill when we went home at our request. we regularly went to him for follow up for some time and then stopped. this year after 9 years we found that my mother had cancer in the mouth and it had spread to her neck ( lymph node). many of our well wishers and family friends said we had to go to cancer specialist. so we visited 2 specialists. both were good surgeons who said the old cancer had not recurred and this was a new cancer.but they were afraid to operate on her as due to her advancing age ( she is above 60 now). my mother lost faith and refused to see any doctors and the surgery. a doctor who is a surgeon himself near my house in mogappair suggested we go back to dr rajkumar to take an opinion as dr rajkumar was being invited internationally to demonstrate surgeries.. we met him at his new hospital at perungudi . dr rajkumar remembered my mother's name and was upset to know she had another cancer. the operation would be complex he explained and required long operation to remove the cancer both from the mouth and the neck.only sir could convince my mother easily for the operation. the operation took 4 hours. the cancer was removed from both places and a temporary plate was placed in the mouth to cover the hole after taking the cancer out. after some time it was removed once the hole closed. she is on follow up with the medical cance specialist and doing well.(touch wood). we know that dr goes to both rigid and lifeline nowadays. he is a busy man because so many patients come to him from all over India and abroad for help. it was difficult to meet him many times . so when we used to phone him he used to come and visit at night 1130 , twelve etc to see my mother after finishing his evening consultation. once we explained that we may not afford the operation and asked him to do the operation in 2 stages - one for the mouth and another for the neck. he said he cannot compromise care. so he did both stages in one setting ( 4 hours ) for same charge. for a few days he went abroad after my mother's operaion during which time his assistant doctors took good care of my mother and got opinions from sir over phone.
I have also heard of bad stories about sir. I do not know how it happened.but still went to him. I really feel sorry for their relatives. trusting a doctor comes only with experience. we have good experiences twice involving high risk complicated operations with good result.let god be with mr durai in his moments of despair.
I do hope people do not delay their treatment with doctors because of negative reports but only think carefully and do what suits them best. Our family still has trust in Dr Rajkumar because he saved m y mother's life twice.it is difficult for me to believe such a person will wantedly do a harm. i am not qualified enough to comment on medical grounds. so i do not wish to comment on the merits or demerits of ms padma's demise. but my heartfelt condolences to mr durai's family. I will leave it at that. chithra

Its sad that something like this has happened to you...

But coming from a family of doctors, let me tell you that there is no evidence that paraplegic ppl can walk with stem cells. Research is going on. Actually if someone has found a cure, they would have been given the noble prize by now.

I truly hope that a cure will be found one and it will be soon...

To me, Sripriya;s logic is illogical. If ignorance is bliss, no one should get education or go to a doctor.

Instead we should analyse how we can improve the system and correct the pitfalls.

I for one would like to insist for total transparency and accountability in every action of every individual and organization when it affects a third party or community.

What you do within your family may be your private affair. But anything affecting any memeber of community / society should be deemed a public affair and every one has a right to know what is happening and should have a right comment / debate and to vote whether it is right or wrong, just as we are doing now. If a majority feel what has been done is wrong based on facts, drastic action needs to be recommended / contemplated by society and not just be a few whose loyalty can be easily purchased!!

Dear Mr.Karthik

Mr.Srinivas's case is not published in their testimonials. His is a 8 year old case. Whereas Mr.Akbar Ali was getting almost well in Feb 07. But it looks Dr.Ravikumar mentioned it otherwise. Because they wanted to show an identical case to Mr.Birju Patel and win his confidence underestimating his probing mind.

Dear Mr Durai,
I feel very much shattered after reading about your ordeal at Life line hospital.I am a practicing family physician in Bangalore.I feel you were cheated right from the first day U met this unethical Doctor.Regarding your query whether your dear wife had a pre existing duodenal ulcer?,i can answer this.Your wife did not have any such ulcer it was in fact a complication of Dr Rajkumar's procedure. He has punctured the duodenum through the peritoneum while inserting his laproscope. The condition your wife suffered post operatively is called as PERFORATION PERITONITIS.
I feel you should file a case against this Doctor. If you do not per suing this Doctor he will persue his unethical ways and thus kill some more innocent patients. He has commit ed a heinous medical crime,i term it as a cold blooded medical murder.
I have practiced medicine in a very honest and ethical way.I have come across many patients of mine being taken for a ride by these hi-tech hospitals.I have sometimes gone to the extent of fighting with the Adm departments of these hospitals to reimburse the money which they have overcharged.
My heart felt sympathies to your grieving family. Our profession has no second chance to offer,i realize this whenever i come across a patient who needs tertiary care.I always prefer teaching institute attached hospitals as they are more ethical and go by the book.
KINDLY CONSIDER SUING THIS DOCTOR.

I wonder what you people understand when a Doctor tells you that there is a 1%or 0.05% risk in a surgery?
It means for every 100 or 200 surgeries performed, 1 can get into complication and may even Die.
How you have been interpreting it so far? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Dear Anonymous Doctor,

Dr.JS Rajkumar might be a sklled surgeon. Probably he allowed his students or assistants to perform the surgery as part of his training class which he indicated to Mr.Duraivel the previous evening.
Or he himself made the hole inadvertently.

Mr.Duraivel is doing big injustice to his wife and society if he is not preferring to work for an enquiry. Circulating mails and bloggiing can get sympathy and support. But one should thrive hard to dig out the truth and expose irregularities and malpractices if it happened or continue to happening.
Dr.JS RajKumar may come out clean or may get punished. But which ever way truth should come out.

Dear Durai,
enough is enough, come out of your griefs and mourning and take steps to find out the truth behind your wife's death. Counsellings and consolations are enough for you. Be bold and start walking.

We all are with you.

Ms. Sripriya, has this been communicated to Durai before the laproscopic surgery?

Anonymous said...

Unfortuantely in India, the Laproscopic surgery is portraied as a very simple procedure. Which is true, but there are risks involved. But most of the doctors doesn't talk about that and give a rosy picture..

Here's a link for educate oursevles.

http://www.emedicinehealth.com/laparoscopy/page6_em.htm

Risks

Complications are rare, but as with any surgery, infection is a risk. Bleeding in the abdomen is also possible. Scars may develop. Anesthesia during surgery can cause heart attack, stroke, and pneumonia, but these consequences are rare.

During laparoscopy, the following risks exist:

The surgeon may puncture an organ. This could cause bleeding. If the colon is ruptured, its contents may spill into the abdomen.

Scar tissue from previous operations could present a problem for the trocars to be inserted into the abdomen. Scar tissue could prevent the gas from expanding the abdomen.
If complications develop or are found, the surgeon may decide to proceed with a larger incision and a standard surgery rather than laparoscopy. This is a decision made with a patient's safety in mind.

If complications develop, the surgeon may follow up by prescribing:

Antibiotics for infection control

Blood transfusion to replace lost blood
Laparoscopic surgery on people who are obese can be complicated. Many doctors advise people to lose weight before surgery, if possible. Certain weight-loss surgeries are, however, now being performed laparoscopically.

KrisDev said...

0.5 to 1% risk of failure of a surgery from succeeding and giving back normal life bereft of the problem for which surgery is done is different from 0.5 to 1% chance of death in a surgery. How does the doctor know the probability of failure or death unless he expects one from past experience! If he is expecting death in a surgery, the case should be so serious that even without the surgery the person is sure to die. But not in the case of healthy persons like Vignesh (incidentally I know him personally as he is my son's classmate and has visited us several times) and the like of Padma and Birju. All these are rich patients from whom a huge sum of money can be extracted. In my opinion, it is high time, Doctors who cannot conduct safe surgeries (instead of killing their patients on the operation table or after the operation) should give up the profession. Sripriya, please correct me if my logic is wrong due to half baked knowledge or ignorance.

Vishnu said...

Risk in surgeries - these are unpredictable and are uncontrollable situations. But a puncture in intestine happens due to negligence. Negligence can not claim 0.5 % immunity as risk factor. Not even .00000005 %.

One of my friends who went to lifeline for stomach pain was told to get admitted the next day for a surgery…luckily he consulted another doctor who prescribed medicines and he recovered in 2 days.

I am really quite stunned!! It draws quite similar parallel to DR death (Dr Patel) here in Australia. 'A Doctor has saved 1000s of live' does not give him permit to play (kill) with 100s of live. From Mr Durai's case and Briju's case it is very obvious that money was the major part of the motivation for Dr Rajkumar and other Doctors in lifeline hospital otherwise they would have not done things in such a hurry (specially in Mr Durai's case).

For Sripriya, you may have good experience with your Dr friend but please just ignore the fact that he is responsible for putting all these people through life time of pain.

And to my surprise Life Line is like a haven for con doctors. So many cheaters under the same roof can only be in a jail.

Sripriya, if you believe in not fighting with the mad dog then why do you bother to write here. Thats what i am telling you, you will end up getting hurt by people's word.

I think you have no respect of people who have lost their lives, people that have been cheated by these people or their families. I am sure that you are someone that works in that hospital. So i hope you guys save your skin because you will be paying a heavy price for all the wrong doings.

When a doctors practices as a businessman he or she looses ethics and the respect of people. If they want to do business ask them to do it openly and not cheat people.

Ms.Sripriya you are writing all thoughts of Great ppl why don't write to point!!!

You sound more like a politician who does not speak to point. Politician are perfect for marketing. Are you anyways in touch with Marketing department? foget it!!!!

Anyways Ms.Sripriya I agree Doctor's are only human and not all surgery's will be a success. Let's agree Dr.Rajkumar is a good person.

Can anyone from lifeline answer these doubts then your views will be considered more seriously.

1. In Birju Patel's case, the impersonation act by Mr. Suresh Raj as K. Srinivas
Why would any one impersonte?
What was the need to impersonate?
Was Suresh Raj punished for this act?
Are mobile phone's given to patients to stay in contact?(This is something new.)

2. In Mr. Durai's case Why the surgery was hurried? Why jet-lag was not considered? Why time was not given to study the reports? In all the succcessful cases you have mentioned in this blog's comments you have mentioned about how Dr.Raj kumar has taked time to read the reports!!!!So was he negligent with this case? Why false report was given to Durai? Why some reports are missing?

3. Why final reports of Mr. Durai's case dated differently.

4. Why Mr.Iyappan's report why report from lifeline and NCRM differ?

Why don't you answer these questions which most of them get puzzled? If you can then everything comes to an end. If you cannot write to point then it means you have half baked knowledge in all these cases and no one would care about your words in future.

Hoping for Ms.Sripriya's reply soon.

Dear BP extremely sorry about this gross violation of a pt's trust in my profession. I hope that someday medicine will advance far enough in our country to afford you a cure; ... any indian institute saying thay have a stem cell cure for neurologic illness is simply advertising like a hooker on the street; this is sadly what hospitals in our country are reduced to . The disinformation you have been put through happens on a smaller scale everyday --- unnecessary tests, surgeries best not done, using the word Cancer to frighten pts into irrelevant treatment, prescribing costlier drugs to increase the cut, asking for CTs for the 500 buck kickback...the list is endless and utterly shameful. This is the unapologetic 'prostitutionalising' of what should be the noblest profession.
These travesties occur in every single private( read run for personal profit )hospitals ; Just today i was consulted by a middle aged lady who had gone to Appolo with what is probably sciatica( an impingement of nerves to the lower limb at the level of the lower spine causing pain )+ a history of a 3 cm cyst in one ovary ( benign and not entirely abnormal at her age )+ what i feel isa psychosomatic complaint of minor chest pain -rarely.The orthopod had referred her straight to the gyno , to investigate for a pelvic cause of her pain, a scan was scheduled, an ECG (which is normal) was mysteriously followed by an ECHO (Rs2250/-).....and for what - she is nowhere near getting her primary complaint sorted out, is being investigated for problems she patently doesn't have and is so confused she is willing to spend another 12ooo (not kidding - 1 day fee without admission) to find out what the suspense is all about.
I watch at my hospital while a surgeon makes people incontinent by his ineptitude in anal surgery, makes incisions pretending to drain abscesses, admits people with normal legs for 'Cellulitis' etc etc etc..(interestingly this person is linked to Durai and the larger story )
Hardly any of the private hospitals in Chennai be it a Christian run or templerun has a pts best interests in mind..pls note that there are a few good ethical doctors but under immense stress from administrations to admit/operate.
While many questions need to be asked let me also remind us that noone becomes a structural engineer by consulting him often even more so a surgeon or physician. 10 plus years go into basic training for an MD alone. To try to simplify medical practice or malpractice can be very misleading if one doesnt have an education, you can trawl the web all you like but if that was all that was reqd it wouldnt be so difficult to get the damn degree.there are medically acceptable risks which at times can and will surface as morbidity or mortality, it is in the lack of concern/expedient intervention for these possibilities and not there occurence that is unacceptable

To BP : SCT in regenerative medicine is a subject under research...todate few proper controlled studies have shown significant results(cardiac myocytes post infarction are showing promise). However it is only a matter of time before the barriers are breached . the speed of scientific discovery is exponential in its growth - time taken to fly :since the dawn of mankind till the 1900s- time taken to go into space was a tiny fraction of that ....your day is not far away my friend.

there are a few places you can trust - NIMHANS, CMC vellore --they have a dedicated stem cell project and facility, dont rely on privateers with dollar signs in their eyes...in the short term robotic aids are on the horizon..
best wishes ,Benda

I am really very reassured by Krisdev, some Anonymous posts and others who understand the value of life and how one should,as a medical professional, work towards perfecting the art of medicine and serving humanity. People like Rajkumar and Sripriya are quite blinded by the power and money that medicine can sometimes bring. Rajkumar apparently operated on 41 hernias in 13 hours and tried to create a record! What does he think he is doing? Are poor people objects? There is a life and a touching story behind every human being. Such thugs should be jailed immediately. What India needs urgently is professional regulation and currently hospitals are run like factories and managers can only talk numbers and money and the rarely look into the life and the story of the person who walks in. The problem with India is that most politicians are criminals and they have managed to have the law under their control. India should be cleansed of all these scumbags and we should start getting educated people running the country. There should be a cap on how much wealth one could hold. What is HAPPINESSS?

Everywhere in this universe, in one respect man's condition is the same. No matter how vastly different he may be in the outer appearance of his life, different countries, different races, different cultures, different languages, different ways of living, eating, dressing, etc., he may be completely different in all of these aspects, but there is one thing that is the same to all human individuals. And it is this factor that binds them into a global unity. If analyzed, it will be discovered that all humanity is engaged ceaselessly, day after day, from the cradle to the grave, only in trying to avoid painful experiences and in trying to attain that which gives them happiness.

Yet, beloved seeker let me ask you this one very important question. Since the time of creation, is there one single individual who has been born onto this earth that can stand up boldly and declare, "In my life I have never experienced any sorrow or pain or suffering whatsoever. My whole life has been a life full of joy, full of happiness, full of bliss". You will find that there is not even one single individual on earth who has not had at some time or another some type of pain or suffering or grief or sorrow.

This is a world of pain and sorrow. With a few minutes thoughtful reflection you will see that this is so. Many painful experiences are brought about by natural forces beyond our control-floods, earthquakes, tidal waves, cyclones, fires, famines. Then there is suffering brought about by other forms of life-germs, microbes, bacteria, viruses, insects, reptiles, animals. But by far the greatest source of suffering is caused by man himself. It is suffering that is self-created, that arises within our own psychological self due to desire and attachment for worldly objects- love and hate, anger and passion, fear, worry, tension, anxiety, jealousy, envy, greed, frustration, disappointment, disillusionment, the sorrow of separation, bereavement, and all other varieties of restlessness of mind due to our multitude of desires.

Everyone thinks happiness is to be found in objects and experiences. Everyone thinks, "If I could only attain certain objects, if I could only possess them, if I could experience them, I will get happiness." In spite of countless disappointments and disillusionments, man never learns.

There is not an iota of happiness in earthly objects. No object is perfect. They do not have in them the power or ability to give you lasting happiness or joy because they are finite and they are imperfect. Otherwise, they must be able to give a homogeneous state of happiness to all beings at all times under all conditions. But what do you actually see? If you like milk and you take a glass full of sweetened milk flavored with spices; the first glass may give you satisfaction. And if you are pressed upon to take another glass, the second glass may give satisfaction, but it is not the same degree of happiness or pleasure as was the first glass. And if your stomach is already full with two glasses of milk, if you try to take a third glass of milk, it becomes unpleasant & undesirable. And if a fourth glass of milk is forced fed on you, it produces nausea and you will have to throw it up.

Where then is real happiness? If milk had in it the power of giving happiness, it must be able to grant you this happiness at all times, under all conditions. It cannot change its nature. Such examples show that all experiences derived from the contact of senses with their respective sense-objects ultimately are experiences that end in disappointment.

Does happiness really rest in the World tour that seems impossible? Or can you find happiness in a little walk down the lane, hand in hand with the love of your life? Yes, just as unbelievable it sounds; it is true that most people in this world WAIT for happiness like they wait to catch the next train. We wait for big things to happen in life and forget the small little packages of joy that come our way. We seem to forget all those wonderful things that we possess and continually crib about what is beyond reach. It is appropriate to look at the advice of the Great Teacher Lord Krishna when he said: "O Arjuna, all these experiences, brought about by the contact of one or other of the five senses with their respective sense objects, are ultimately the source of sorrow. There is no real happiness in these sense contacts and sense experiences. They are but mere momentary sensations producing pain."

Conclusion:

Even the most mundane things in life can become the most beautiful experiences if viewed in a different perspective, if tackled differently. In simple words, it is the ATTITUDE that brings you happiness in most cases than the actual object of joy. Making best of life's situations, being content with what you have are sure ways to everlasting happiness. One does not need to chase happiness then, it will come and perch itself in your life like a beautiful butterfly.

Hi
I am a doctor from UK. Even I cannot digest the attitudes of so called Big hospitals (Eg. Appollo, Lifeline etc). The doctors in those hospitals are branded as super heros. But they are not. The is no check point for their practice. If they do some good work it is published as miracle. But if they commit mistakes it is hidden. They will never take responsibilities for their mistakes. They should be suied.

I would like to share an experience with you about Apollo HOspital. One of my friend admitted his mother for minor surgery. The found a spider in the IV fluid bag. My friend wanted to complain about it, but he was forced to write in a paper that the care his mother recieved was excellet at this hospital by "Gundas". Here you go about the care in so called Big hospitals

Hi,
My name is Srinivasan and work in an IT company. I am not educated enough on medical but I think I can share few points from common sense.
1. How muchever learned or educated are we, do we do a study of situations without having get carried away by the so called "eminent" doctors? Nowadays even insurance firms offer for a second opinion from a different medical team other than the ones we consult. And, internet, you find all good and bad opinions in point AND ALSO Medical details.. (I think we can even get the research details even if it is an upcoming medical technique)
2. We all think that we will get better support with more money. THis is the starting point for corruption in every field. Think about negligence in an overbridge construction in Hyderabad that cost too many lives.. Negligence is a criminal offence whichever field one may work. This is why in aerospace and military euipments there are lot lot standards to ensure guaranteed results. Where are the medical standards published and how much do the hosiptals follow them, though there nmay be a case to case difference, nonetheless, the standards have to be traceable and transparent such that we can start to believe there are systems that take corrective action even if there are any mistakes out of anything, call it negligence or incompetence.
3. How many of us even aware of any first aid practices or how many of us get trained for that. Why are we so ignorant towards certain life critical things and spend whole time watching TVs or doing things "useful for nothing". Even our education system focuses more on "useful for nothing" like history subject rather than any useful and latest developments in the world. How latest is the information is provided to our children.. or us..
4. A doctor, coming forward to accept his mistakes and sincerely apologizing for any wrong/ignorant decisions (he always needs to consult another doctor before he takes his decision for a particular procedure), will have his credibility higher instead of one who gives false information and wrong medical report. If he is hiding behind and taking help of some of his idiot chatter boxes, it shows how much coward he is and also confirms that he had committed the mistake.

I sincerely feel for Durai and Birju (luckily, Birju is safer). I cannot explain my feelings if one has to loose his wife at a very early stage, I lost my mother when I was 4, I had my wife undergo a serious operation resulting in removal of ovary, atleast just a few years ago. Though hospital (VIjaya Hospital) took a long time to dianose and decide on the surgery, she was lucky after the surgery. I cannot explain how much I was releieved that day. Durai, take care of your children and help them cope up with the loss.

Srinivasan's arguments are very logical and practical. We need to evolve systems and standards and checklist for every action to be made public before, during and after any activity.

Right to information Act should get amended to include this standards, systems, checklist and publication failing which the individual and organization should be liable for prosecution and trial.

Dear Supriya,

kindly revert on Prabhakars following Quiry. You work like an agent for Dr. Rajkumar. Don't hv any true feeling on the victims killed by Dr. Rajkumar?

Regards,

Hari

I feel sorry for mr durai and others.

Where r u hiding Ms Sri Priya!!! I'm sure you have never been able to differentiate between the Unethical practices and the ethics of Medicine..
Chances of Risk of 0.5%-1% is always there for any kind of surgery which happens... But that does not mean one needs to maintain in every 100 to create Records!!!
What exactly u r talking is like supporting a killer who does justice to poor by donating and at the same time killing innocents ...

Sripriya,

Do you know the value of life? Just imagine for a sec, if this same incident had happened to one of your daughters or your husband, Will you be chanting Dr.Rajkumar's name like this??? One drop of poison is enough to spoil the whole pint of milk. The problem is you haven't tasted the poisened milk but the victim does.

Hi all,

I read few comments and didn't go thru all of them. Did you guys create any kind of team or organization which would fight against all hospitals with "no medical ethics". Did you guys start an aggigation? I know that someone has to sacrifice for a social cause. I believe that we can fight he sysytem. Can we do something big that would the entire purify the system?

I think we had been waiting long for a change in the society. We need few people who can dedicate themselves to the society.

Everything starts with small, why don't we plan something big, I am sure milliions of people would join us. let's not just exchange emails... let's do something that should inspire others..

Kartik09,

Can u elaborate what you think WE all should jointly do to create public pressure on unethical medical practices? I think it should be extended to other practices too.

Hi all,

I agree with the last blogger. There are a couple of consumer activists in this blog trail who can help put together an organisation that can demand transparency in medical practises - and find a legal recourse for such malpractises. Getting organised is important since without any such cohesive measure, such news becomes gossip or mere blogging. There are plenty of dark and grey areas in our great haven of medicine that deserve exposing and unless there is a cohesive force, nothing much can be achieved. Most such doctors are 'respected' members of society, a society which will not expose them easily.
Birju/Dorai, both of you have reasons why you would like to protect others. Be more than a catalyst - effect change!

I am really concerned to read all these. But I have to say the following
1) People should be punished for professional negligence. No matter who they are and what high regards they have built earlier.
2) As a professional, One is expected to be 100% cautious when things / event like this cannot be reversed. What is done is done and there is no recourse.
3) Life is a not an ordinary one and care has to be taken for all the 100 lives that you are treating. you cannot say i have treated 99 with my best efforts.
4) Efforts are to be distinguished from negligence. One may have all the knowledge, put in all the efforts. But if there is a negligence, I think there is a strong case to punish him.
5) What i understand is Professional misconduct, Wilful negligence, Inferior management and Not so good medical practices.
6) In such a case there is a strong case for a person to sue the doctor and the team and bring them in books.
7) If the present laws are not so good enough, Then i see that time has for us to have one.
Go ahead and you guys should not stop till the goal is reached.. Finally it is your goal.. All the reader of this blog would be empathisers and supporters. But finally only You can make it happen.
Wish u a good luck and good work.
Thanks

I happen to read upon these comments. In a developed medical society like Chennai this will happen no doubt.

But begging and robbery in the name of custodians of Life is globalization at its best.

As far as Iyappan's and Sripriya's writing goes they repeatingly trying to brainwash or so.

never are they willing clarify the wrongs instead they successfully glorify somebody with diverting glitters.

Brilliant doctors with their brains started to act really like Gods.they can make or break Heaven or Hell. But whos going to bell the cat?

definitely no one in this India not in the future ever.so many complications u can only imagine the extent of imagination.

We need to get united.

it has been fascinating to read the comments. all the people who suffered at the hands of this hospital, my heartfelt sympathies. there are a few things people need to know about the practice of medicine in India today.
-it is a business. people spend vast amounts of money to become a doctor. you don't need marks anymore just money. you have to recoup this money
-the overwhelming majority of doctors in india are owned by drug companies who pay all the doctors' expenses including home requirements and holidays
-the overwhelming majority of docs get kickbacks for every test they order. they therefore maximise their income by ordering unecessary tests.
-pretty much anyone can start a medical college these days, money and political clout will get you approval from the educational authorities. in kerala pretty much every community has their own medical school! fake faculty are trotted out on days of planned 'inspections' by the governing bodies. these people are paid money to pretend to be faculty for a day. you can guess what the quality of training is going to be. i know because some of them come to the uk and i have to train them.
-pre and post operative care is abysmal. success in india is measured by the wealth of the doctor not their results. complications happen with surgery. the quality of the surgeon is based on the early recognition and treatment of these complications.
-the story of the lady who died following a ventral hernia repair is heartbreaking. she should never have died. she obviously had a accidental perforation of her bowel with the laparoscope which was not recognised and treated. she developed septic shock as a result. this condition unfortunately even in the hands of the best intensive care units has a very high risk of death, it would appear that the surgeon was running the show in the ICU. i doubt that he had the training to do that.
-this guy rajkumar seems to be the only doctor in this hospital. why is he treating medical cases as well. he also has a chequered career. it is alleged that he had to get out of england in a hurry because as a junior trainee he was practising unethically with the help of his wife, also a junior trainee at the time.
-to the guy with the spinal cord injury, please don't get suckered in by claims made in indian hospitals. if this little hospital run by one man had truly achieved what no one else in the world had they would make headline news everywhere. unfortunately organisations such as this prey on people like you and tell you what you want to hear and take your money
-i work in the nhs in the uk. i come back from work every day thinking what a shitty organisation i work in, but you know what? when i hear about the medicine that is being practised in india (including by my classmates) i feel so glad that i am still able to practice medicine ethically and morally and for the reasons i went into it in the first place!
-and finally to those doctors in india who still have a semblance of dignity and moral fibre who have not succumbed to the commercial inducements, my apologies and a huge salute for surviving in this cesspool!

CYBER BULLYING and EVE TEASING !! Dear blogers you are guilty of BOTH.
I from my end have only tried to console and counsel a bereaved husband and an ailing person, by sharing something pleasant that I have experienced.

To this I am being retaliated as a paid agent, doubting my credibility, calling me inhuman, insensitive (dont want to extend the list the other accisitions you have made) as it is very well there in the blog site, all this is nothing short of EVE TEASING!

If for some reason I get vexed and decide to end my life for these derogatory statements or if some irreparable damage is caused by your words, then wouldn’t it amount to a crime caused by you?
Please let me know why I am being teased for no rhyme or reason.

The same goes for Dr. J S Rajkumar. What do you know about his credentials, his skills, his accomplishments, his service to Mankind, above all his standing in the Society?
In fact, He has made our Country Proud by many of his Contributions, being the only Indian to have the distinction of certain Achievements!

If you really have anything against please direct it through proper channel and do not BULLY!

Thiruvalluvar said,” Theeinal suttapun ullarum, arathay nayinal sutta vadu”.( The hurt caused by a burn will heal, but the hurt caused by words will never heal).

I believe,One should always try to emulate great personalities to improve ones quality of life.

If you want to develop your Ego and self pity, surround yourself with people who look up to you,and sympathise with you. Instead,

If you want to develop yourself surround yourself with the people and thoughts of people whom you look up to and that is what I am doing by quoting the words of Great Personalities.

Next time before you make a caustic, derogatory, baseless, rude statement, I recommend you visit sites on CYBER BULLYING, so that you will know it is a CRIME and is PUNISHABLE by law. Also wonder why none of you have read the Article on Cyber Bullies, in Reader’s Digest, narrating how a few VIP’s at the receiving end has Committed suicide. Also on the work by certain Internatioanl Agencies on curbing this menace.

Remember, Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Some immediate, some may take time, But you can’t escape the fruit of ACTION.

You have so many suggestions on what the future course of action should be, Now What should I do? Give a Compliant?

Hats off Vishnu.

I am sure everyone will agree, that no one here desires to bully any one or indulge in any cyber crime. If any one thinks so, please stand corrected immediately.

We are here discussing the reality of what happened to gullible citizens whose money was extracted without any benefit and ultimate life long impairment / death of patients.

We need concrete solutions to the reality of the problem and not throw tantrums. We are not playing a ping-pong game of words.

Failure of treatment / death of patients in the hands of doctors / hospitals where they are admitted for surgery / treatment is a serious matter. We need corrective action and preventive action in line with ISO 9000 principles.

No one, however high and mighty they are, should go scot free, for their acts of commission and omission, resulting in harm / death to patients as it is a matter of life and death and negates the fundamental right to freedom to live peacefully as enshrined in the constitution and human rights declaration.

Hi Guys,
I am very sad to hear this kind acctivities are going on in India.

Like educationational instutions hospitals also became money minded.

From my understanding Doctors in India are not making great money as people in IT and other areas. So their attitude turned towards making more money.

1. Always approach family doctor. If dont have one, please build up relationship with one doctor. This will really help you and your family. If you are NRI visit your family doctor on each and every visit.

2. Always have second round of counsulting before making big decision about surgery and etc.

3. Think of alternative medical treatment like homeopathy, auyur veda and etc. Each has it is own good and bad.

LIFE AFTER DEATH – real life (rather death) experience
Original Author: Durai (durai.gopal@wipro.com)

I can now think of so many questions retrospectively;

Guys,

In our family, we had a terrible experience with Lifeline. They milked us of Rs. 13 Lacs and gave poor treatment and attention to my F-I-L. He was on the edge twice - due to sheer negligence by the hospital. We finally gathered courage and brought him back home. He was under our family care with physicians with a heart. We also took the counsel of doctor friends abroad. My F-I-L is back to normal again only because we got him out of Lifeline!

The hospital and the doctor deserves to be blacklisted. A few good reference cases does not mean anything.

In Chennai, I would trust VHS, Sundaram Medical Foundation and even the Govt. Hospitals than Lifeline.

Based on my objective observation and evaluation of what happened in Lifeline, I have instructed my wife not to take any of our kith and kin ever to Lifeline hospital.

If there is any serious action contemplated against the hospital, I will support it.

Hello friends,

For obvious reasons I will remain anonymous but I am from Chennai, and here is what I have to warn you all about. It is hardly reported but one person dies every month in the Lifeline hospital. Dr. Rajkumar has strong political connections and he is able to get away with many of his and the hospital's crimes. Although I haven't been told exactly what the nature of his crimes I strongly suspect organ harvesting, exporting etc. Avoid this hospital at all costs. Ask anyone who passes by this hospital and they will tell you it looks so deserted they could have used that valuable space for something else. If you care for the lives of your beloved ones or the lives of others never go there or advise others the same. Another hospital that you must avoid is Jaya Hospital down Velachery Road that is run by a bunch of inept doctors who hardly have any idea of what they are doing. Treatments for small ailments are taken to the surgical level and at exhorbitant costs. Unlike Lifeline these guys hardly have any infrastructure, qualified staff or premises to be running a hospital. Avoid both these hospitals at all costs. Even a lost fortune can be earned but not precious life.

Sripriya has to take steps to bring the truth to light as she is very much affected by the comments of Dr.Rajkumar.She will be doing a great service to the society and to Dr.Rajkumar if she challenges the accusations of Durai and Brijesh. I think it is her duty to do so for the genuine concern she has expressed in these columns to defend the reputation of the doctor. Being practical is more useful that being philosophical.

One can only riducule the approach of dr. rajkumar for suggesting a patient to contact another patient for support. When Dr. Rajkumar has a psychologist and psychotherapist working in his own hospital why did he refer to a unqualified and unprofessional person for providing support. Does he not believe in his own professional team

Anonymous said...

i like to bring to the notice of the public that raj kumar's team had widely asked for project proposals on various programmes ranging from stem cell therapy to providing comprehensive care for the IT industires around his hospital. After collecting the proposals he did not even have the courtesy to get back to any one who had sent the proposal but happily went on to implement the proposals on his own. If this joker does not have ideas is this the way to get ideas to make money to repay the huge loan in crores he took to build the hospital.

How can this character be doing free service to the poor and rural people. I wonder what is happening in this pretext - I hope his free service does not result in making people free of their own organs.

rajkumar you are a shame to our country.

I wonder who is this clown sripriya is in the entire frame of things. If she is doing PR work for rajkumar? why is she doing it. What does she get out of it.

ladies and gentlemen i recently heard from a patient that he went to Neurology department in Voluntary Health Services Medical Centre at taramani - about 3 kilo meters from life line hospital. I belive the department operates without a single qualified Neurologist. Even before the patient said about his problem the doctor has asked her to do an MRI scan!

All patients are given counselling by a team of unqualified, unskilled and professionally uncertified counsellors. Also out of the video eeg donated to the department they make money by charging exorbidant amounts to their own private patients.

They have a policy that whatever be your problem first ask to do an MRI Scan (Rs.8000) only in vita diagnostics. if they have already done it they say it is not of good quality so advice to do it again!

Huge grants are obtained for wellfare projects and then spent for buying vechiles for the director, his wife, his son, daughter-in-law, grand son - probably a bike for the servant? Couple of funding organisations have obtained the misuse and have stopped thier grants to this organisation. They also demand a portion of the scholarship if any of the employee in the department get grant to study abroad.

All these fellows do free service to cover up their undercover activities.

sir thanks for brining in information about neurology department, VHS hospital.

The chairman (the only neurologist in the deparment but refuses to see patients) does lot of programmes with foreign doctors. But if we approach them they treat us like dirt - we cannot see any neurologist in the deparment. But if we go as their private patients we can even see the foreign doctor for a huge fee.(according to them a small fee to cover his expenses)

The director has madly shouted at me three times so far: 1. for standing instead of sitting in the reception area. 2. for leaning against the wall. 3. for refusing to do a repeat MRI after doing it just a month back.

Looks like the old man himself needs psychiatric treatment; as he seems to think he is living in london - he has apparently lived in london for 3 months 40 years ago!!

God save our people from these demons.

A relative informed me that apparently these people were thrown out of the Public Health Centre West Mambalam for diverting department funds for private foreign travels which included the spouses too and misutilising of funds for personal gains. There were bills for lakhs of rupees for buying books - but no such books were there in their library.(probably they are in their residence or money in the form of sarees for his aging wife)So they were unceremoniously thrown out of the public health centre.

it is because of characters like sripriya who blindly support these doctors, these fellows take advantage of all of us. Sripriya try to understand the pain of a man who has lost his wife. We dont want to hear any nonsense from you about gratitude. Be ashamed of yourself for this public rambling

Dear Mr.Durai,
my heartfelt condolences in the first place. I am an advocate and i strongly feel that you should do justice to your wife by filing a criminal suit against such inhuman doctors. Doctors profession is supposed to be the noblest profession. He is money minded. His programmes come in tv channels. They work for name and fame and play with human lives. If they are dedicated to their job such things would not have happened, i just dont want to get into lifeline hospital even in my dreams.

Or.. may be characters like SriPriya are being created by supporters/runners of such defamed hospital. If a person can be created on phone why cant a person be created in a blog. Really shocking to here things like that happening. Doctors are treated to be visible Gods in a country like ours and can't imagine sometimes to what extent they can fall for money.
Such docs should be hanged.

It was your fault to believe a doctor in India . Hospitals are run like business houses and they dont serve the society anymore and we idiots are lured with their ads , their good looking receptionist and their faclities .
Never ever choose a doctor on your own got your GP first before going to these kind of clincs . I am not blaming doctors here but we do have rogues everywhere ..Fortune favours brave.

It was a truly tragic incident of padma's case.May her innocent soul rest in peace. May almighty god give courage & strength to Durai to overcome this and take good care of his children as father and mother. It's very sad that he took a hasty decision to go for a surgery though it is not an emergency. Dr JSR & his team is a bunch of clowns. They dont hesitate to experiment people's lives. For them you are one among 1000s.He don't bother. I really surprised you'd fallen in his words though you'd consulted in UK. I'm working in overseas. When I met this joker in july this year for an ailment,he immediately suggested for a surgery without giving any options to discuss. I told him i will make my own decisions before confirmation. Luckily i escaped from the misfortune. Life line is a blood sucking vampire(a "death line"). As One of the doctor precisely wrote, its a cold blooded medical murder. Dont spare this group of killer doctors.

Who is this "Sri Priya"? Is this merciless woman hails from another planet? What does she knows about humanity? I think her days are numbered. God is watching her. She doesn't know what she does. Blindly supporting her ruthless killer boss ...

My grievences to durai & family. It's shocking incident which shouldnt happen in anyone's life. It's sad that Durai chosen a wrong time to go for surgery though it's not an emergency case, when his 2nd child still nursed by his wife.
I understood Dr.Rajkumar have political connections and any medical crime he make, its quite easy for him to come out of it.
JSR might be a champion of doing maximum number of surgeries in a day, but he have to be accountable of his every mistakes. He advise patients for surgery even for small ailment which could be cured by medication & health care. He may be surgeon but not a butcher.
When one of friends met him at perungudi for a minor ailment, he advised him to do a surgery on next day and asked my friend to start to take all the tests. My friend asked rajkumar whether the thing could be done by medication. He said No. Surgery is the best option. My friend told him that he need time to decide. After that he never went to see him.He is fine now without doing any surgery.
Guys, better be careful when you go to hospitals, have more consultations with different doctors. Afterall it is your life.If anything goes wrong in india it's a lenghty process to win a case as there are lot of loopholes in the indian legal system. Anyway you've got to do some justice for your innocent wife. Take care...

http://www.mouthshut.com/review/Shrey_Hospitals-155945-1.html

The worst hospital in ahmedabad. Never trust any doctor who refers/recommends this hospital. please get your relatives/aquantainces/loved ones/friends out of this hospital in case they or somebody known to them is admitted in this hospital else you can happily watch them die and also see them drain their hard earned money into the sewage (Shrey hospital). The doctors/nursing staff is inexperienced. there is lack of cleanliness, hygiene. Their senior nursing staff also left as a result of mismanagement. Good/honest doctors are not willing to even visit this hospital.

Many people have had bitter experiences and have lost their near and dear ones as a result of the poor infrastructure and inexperienced/immature doctors. Their Operation Theater sucks . It does not have basic life saving instruments. The X-ray machine, echo machine etc. are dated. How can a hospital claim to be a multi specialty hospital with junior doctors being forced to work as experienced specialists for paltry sum and the lack of above mentioned instruments.

Don’t ever fall for their medical store in case you are admitted to the hospital for a short period (i pray you get out of it right now) but are forced to stay better make it a point to buy medicines from outside. The mgmt has clear strategies to fleece people till they die.

Ask any body who has seen their loved ones die a slow death (full of torture) at the hands of the doctors/nursingstaff/staff in Shrey hospital and they have the same story to tell.

I am deeply, deeply (!) sorry to hear of your experience with the Chennai hospital. I am equally sorry and horrified to hear of Mr. Durai's loss of his wife because of medical malpractice from the same doctor.

It has been my experience too that Tamil Nadu (TN) hospitals and chennai doctors have rapidly become butcher shops and butcherers since the last 10-15 years, with the quality of medical practice deteriorating year by year. This may be due to the religion/caste politics played out in TN, with overwhelming majority of appointments of doctors and other medical staff in large hosptitals done solely through political connections, rather than on the medical personnel's skill, training and expertise, as was the case decades ago.

I was myself amazed - nay, horrified! - at the extent to which many of these doctors seem to prey on patients, and behave like scam artists, promising all kinds of treatment for large sums of money.

Many of these doctors claim falsely to have advanced training and degrees, when in reality they have no such qualification and are no more than quacks.

Since these doctors are politically connected, it is very difficult hold them accountable for any malpractice, and prosecute them for malpractice and gross negligence. These doctors are confident they will never be prosecuted, and can get away with even murder. Well, they wouldn't be wrong, given their political connections. They are thus able to continue with their malpractices and unethical conduct, and exploit many more vulnerable patients with their fake list of 'accomplishments.'

Some patients of such doctors were lucky to have escaped with their lives intact; others it seem were not so lucky.

I am glad you have chosen to tell your story; as many others have also done so here. It is important to somehow keep the pressure on the Indian medical board to stop such butcherers (doctors) from committing more crimes. Even if the Indian law will not prosecute these doctors because of their political connections, at least creating a blacklist board with these scam artist doctors names on it, will serve to inform and educate the community about these doctors, and warn potential patients.

My prayers are with you, and with all those who have had to go through similar traumatic experience.

Please don't lose hope. There are only few places that offer stem cell therapy, for selective diseases. I believe Germany seems to offer such therapy, although it seems to be for certain types of cancer.I Will need to check up on this. Will inform you soon.

Vas said...

I just cannot resist adding this, after going through other letters here.

This Iyppan and Sripriya seem like the spin-dotors of Dr. Rajkumar. Could they be some relatives, friends or associates of the doctor doing some PR work for him? Just like this Suresh Babu, an associate of the doctor, who doubles up as the 'cured patient,' for the sake of advertisement, to lure naive patients into the doctor's hospital.

I simply don't buy these two' personal stories as authentic. It reeks too much of glorification of this doctor and trumpeting about his greatness, to be true. These two probably visit every forum that has malpractice information on Dr. Rajkumar, and write stories of his so called 'greatness'.

I've seen too many scam business, whatever may be their line of business, employ this kind of PR, spin doctor strategies to white-wash their misdeeds, that I just have to dismis these stories as creative writing and Nothing More!

Patelville said...

Thanks Vas for the support and please let us know if u have any info on other stem cell providers

Vas said...

Dear Birju (and to others who may find this useful):

Here's the website of a place called XCell in Dusseldrof and Cologne, Germany that does some stell cell therapy. The information is in English, so you can go through it.

http://www.xcell-center.com/

I don't personally know anyone that has been treated here, so I cannot give any evaluation/personal opinion of the place. But still, since currently Germany has one of the highest, and strictest, standards in quality control in the medical field, it is unlikely that such clinics can survive this long if they were indulging in some sort of unethical conduct or malpractice.

There is also a forum from which you might be able to get some information on other clinics in the world and other people's experience in such clinics.

http://www.topix.com/forum/tech/stem-cell-research/THFKJONDL64GI8026

Just keep an eye on this webpage (forum) periodically to see if any new clinic names or experiences with certain treatments crop up in the forum.

Hey guys this is the reality of these days. doctors in India are shamelessly murdering their patients for a few bucks. An uncle in my neighborhood whose son is a doctor working in Fortis, Chandiarh told my mother that how his son has been instructed by the administration of the hospital to not to cure any patient, and leave the rest to them. He told her that he doesn't want to do anything about it they have given heavy donation to get their son admitted in a medical college and need to recover the cost.

I wonder how come Saran got to do this and find birjupatel's blog. Really funny and rightly reflecting the true intentions of MrSaran.
All Lifeline can do is accept the reality and mistakes they have committed and try not to cheat innocent patients in future. If you continue a good service for a longtime eventually all complaints against the hospital and doctors will fade.
